Prepare a charcoal grill. Use a quantity of coals that will provide for a moderate heat source. Grease the grate so that the chicken skin will not stick. When the coals get red-hot and ashy, place the chicken, skin-side down, on the grate. Inspect the progress of the chicken, turning as needed. Continue to turn the chicken until the juices run clear. During the last 5-10 minutes of grilling time, baste with BBQ sauce. The chicken should take about 30 minutes - in total - to grill to perfection.
Remove the chicken from the grill, and season it - aggressively - with salt and pepper. Allow the chicken to rest 5-8 minutes before serving.
